Two Arrested in Assault on Irvington Officers
Irvington, NJ - On January 19, 2006, two area men
were arrested and charged with aggravated assault of two Irvington
police officers from a January 11th attack. Abdul Cameron,
27, Norman Rd., Newark, and Jerome R. Mitchell, 24,
Park Pl., Irvington, were both charged with aggravated assault
(2 counts), possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, eluding
and receiving stolen property. Both men are being lodged in
the Essex County Jail pending arraignment.
On January 11, 2006, Irvington Officers William Gatling and Dennie Young, assigned to the Ó£»¨ÊÓƵ State Police Strategic Investigations Unit, were working on an investigation on the Newark/Irvington border when they observed a stolen blue Subaru with a PA registration. After executing a high-risk stop at Coit St. and Nye Ave., the driver stuck his arm out of the drivers side window and fired a handgun in the direction of the officers. The driver drove forward, turned around and passed the officers with the gun pointed at them. The vehicle was pursued, but later lost in Newark. Neither officer was injured.
Two hours later the suspect vehicle was located on Smith St. in Newark by Newark Police Department. Evidence retrieved at the scene of the shooting lead police to identify Cameron, who was arrested on January 19, 2006 and Mitchell, who was located in Essex County Jail on unrelated charges.
Pending processing of evidence additional charges may be forthcoming.
