Statement from Commissioner Adelman on proposed Medicaid cuts

From Ó£»¨ÊÓƵ Human Services Commissioner Sarah Adelman:

This proposal would cut people off from coverage and take vital funding away from Ó£»¨ÊÓƵ.

We are still analyzing the proposal, but let me be clear about what some provisions will mean for our families:

  • Work requirements are a wasteful bureaucratic barrier. Most Medicaid recipients already work, and those who don’t often face serious challenges such as illness, caregiving, or recovery. These rules will take coverage away from people who need it.
  • Frequent eligibility checks are more inefficient red tape, not better oversight. These extra checks just increase costs, create delays, and block care for eligible individuals.
  • Punishing states for using state funds to provide health coverage regardless of immigration status is cruel and shortsighted. Investing in preventive health care pays off for all of us.
  • Cutting federal support undermines our entire healthcare system. Hospitals, clinics, and primary care providers depend on Medicaid. These changes threaten their ability to serve everyone and maintain their workforces, driving up costs and delaying care.

This proposal doesn’t promote efficiency or expand access. It’s a step backward - and a serious threat to the health and well-being of Ó£»¨ÊÓƵ families.
