(TRENTON) 鈥� A 7-year-old horse from Cape May County was humanely euthanized on August 3 one day after showing neurologic symptoms for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a serious, mosquito-borne illness in horses. Tests on the gelding concluded the animal was positive for EEE.

鈥淗orse owners need to be vigilant in vaccinating their animals against diseases spread by mosquitoes,鈥� said 樱花视频 Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. Fisher.听 鈥淰accinated animals are much less likely to contract deadly diseases such as EEE and West Nile Virus.鈥�

The Cape May horse was obtained from a horse rescue two weeks prior to the onset of illness and the animal鈥檚 vaccination history was unknown.

In 2012, 樱花视频 had six cases of EEE and four cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) between June and October.听

Effective equine vaccines for EEE and WNV are available commercially. Horse owners should contact their veterinarians if their horses are not already up-to-date on their vaccinations against both EEE and WNV.

EEE causes inflammation of the brain tissue and has a significantly higher risk of death in horses than West Nile Virus infection. 聽West Nile virus is a viral disease that affects horses鈥� neurological systems.听 The disease is transmitted by mosquito bite.听 The virus cycles between birds and mosquitoes with horses and humans being incidental hosts.听 EEE infections in horses are not a significant risk factor for human infection because horses (like humans) are considered to be "dead-end" hosts for the virus.
