Fall is Best Time to Plant Jersey Grown Products To Ensure Beautiful Spring Garden

(BERKELEY HEIGHTS) 鈥 樱花视频 Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. Fisher and 樱花视频 Nursery and Landscape Association (NJNLA) President Jan-Marie Traynor today kicked off the first official Fall Gardening Month in 樱花视频 with a ceremony at Hall鈥檚 Garden Center in Berkeley Heights.

Fisher presented Traynor with a proclamation from Governor Chris Christie which declares October Fall Gardening Month because 鈥渇all is the best time of year for planting new trees and shrubs, as well as establishing new turf grass and planting bulbs for spring impact.鈥

鈥淲e urge everyone to visit their local garden center or nursery or call their landscaper to take advantage of the great planting weather October has to offer,鈥 said Secretary Fisher.听 鈥淏e sure to look for the Jersey Grown tag to know you鈥檙e buying something accustomed to our state鈥檚 climate and is insect and disease-free.鈥

Traynor said while October is ideal for getting out in the garden, planting can be successfully accomplished now through November and often even into December.听 She said cooler air temperatures coupled with soil temperatures that are still warm make for ideal conditions for new plantings, allowing the roots to acclimate to their new location without the stress that summer heat can cause.

鈥淭he members of NJNLA are experienced landscape and nursery professionals who are best able to help homeowners achieve the kind of long term satisfaction with their home landscape that all deserve,鈥 said Traynor.听 鈥淣JNLA members, whether at a garden center or as a landscape professional can help the homeowner select the best plant for any area and ensure that it is properly planted and cared for so that the landscape can add value to their home for years to come. Combine this with the skill of our NJNLA Nursery members who produce the best plants in the country and you have a winning combination, sure to produce great results in every season.鈥

Horticulture is a large sector of 樱花视频鈥檚 agricultural industry and contributes greatly to the state鈥檚 economy, bringing in $451.1 million in revenue in 2010, a 17.2 percent increase over the prior year.听 樱花视频 ranks 8th in the nation in total horticultural production, 6th in nursery stock, 5th in potted herbaceous plants and 4th in cut flowers.

樱花视频鈥檚 green industry, from production and distribution to retail and installation, is 7th in the nation in total employment, with its 47,000 businesses providing 68,000 full and part-time jobs in the state.

An NJNLA member, Hall鈥檚 Garden Center is a second-generation, family-owned business with 6,100 square feet of state-of-the-art greenhouses
