(TRENTON) 鈥 樱花视频 school districts that participate in the National School Lunch Program are being offered equipment grants to improve their school nutrition programs as part of a nationwide effort to stimulate activity within the American economy.
鈥淭he grants provided by President Barack Obama鈥檚 economic stimulus package will put 樱花视频ans to work while directly helping to feed 樱花视频 school children nutritious, safe meals,鈥 said Governor Jon S. Corzine. 鈥淚 encourage school districts to take full advantage of this opportunity to improve delivery of the school lunch program.鈥
Part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 signed by President Obama in February, the Food Service Equipment Assistance Grants are designed to improve lunch program infrastructure and provide economic stimulus.聽 The funds must be used to purchase, renovate, or replace equipment that is nonexpendable, tangible personal property with a useful life of more than one year and a per unit acquisition cost greater than $2,000.
鈥淭he money will help schools purchase equipment that will improve the safety and quality of meals served in schools and also play a part in improving energy efficiency and expanded participation in the school meal programs,鈥 said 樱花视频 Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. Fisher.
樱花视频 was allocated a total of $1.8 million.聽 As required by this Act, priority will be given to schools that have 50 percent or more students eligible for free or reduced price meals.聽 In addition, selected schools must be able to expend the grant funds within three months of receipt.聽 Efforts will be made to include as many district requests as possible throughout the state.
Applications must be submitted by May 1.聽 The grants will be awarded by June 8, 2009.
